Graded Participation is Here!

We’ve seen that students who use Waymaker’s ungraded practice activities do, on average, at least 5% better than those who don’t. Sadly fewer students than we would like make full use of these features - some need a little extra motivation.

That’s why on May 4, 2020 we released graded participation in Waymaker courses.

How It Works

As students work through the self checks in the study plan their participation will be recorded. Participation for a self check will be granted the first time they complete the activity end to end, and will be granted only once. Student’s can take the self checks as many times as they like. How they do on the self checks won’t in any way impact their grade.

If grade passback is enabled (see below), Waymaker will pass a percentage completion back to the gradebook as they complete self checks. Each study plan will have its own gradebook column for recording participation. The percentage passed back will be applied to the point value you have assigned for that study plan in your LMS gradebook.

Will This Be Available in My Course / Will I Need a New Cartridge?

Participation will only be available in the newest versions of Lumen’s courses. To see which version is the most recent for each course, and find out how to check which version of the course you are currently using, visit our support site article on graded participation

Participation will automatically be available (tracked and viewable) in all compatible courses starting from May 4, 2020 onwards, however not all courses may be enabled for automatic passback to the gradebook.

Because of LMS constraints only new courses created from cartridges delivered on or after May 4, 2020 will have automatic grade passback for Study Plans (grade passback for quizzes will continue to work as they always have in all courses).

Faculty will be able to view students’ participation grades from the Faculty Tools by going to the Student Histories page. For each student, faculty will be able to see per study plan exactly which self checks were completed and what percentage completion the student achieved.

The Student Histories page will also allow faculty to export all Waymaker Grades. You will be able to use this export to assign participation grades manually or import grades for students should you wish to use this feature, but not have Study Plan grade passback enabled yet.

If you do want grade passback enabled and want a new cartridge please reach out to our support team at support@lumenlearning.com. If you are on the latest Lumen version of your course we may also be able to help you replace just the study plan items in your current course, rather than needing to bring in a whole new cartridge.
