SUNY Resources to Support Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Through SUNY’s partnership with Lumen Learning, SUNY faculty and staff have access to two professional development opportunities that support their efforts to meet the new Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice skills area of the SUNY General Education Framework.
Engagement in these professional development opportunities, available at no cost to SUNY faculty and staff, will help faculty broaden their skill sets to embed racial equity into their curriculum and will help promote a more inclusive culture across SUNY.

Lumen Circles Fellowship:
Belonging & Inclusive Teaching Fundamentals
Lumen Circles’s Belonging & Inclusive Teaching Fundamentals fellowships help faculty explore teaching strategies that support success for all students by helping them feel seen, respected, and included as capable partners in the learning process. In this fellowship, instructors learn to facilitate inclusive environments where all students feel they belong and can thrive personally and academically.
This fellowship is appropriate for faculty currently teaching a course and will help them expand their skills in support of the new SUNY Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice General Education Framework.

2-3 hours/week, working asynchronously.
- How many people are in a Circle?
10-15 fellows plus a facilitator.
- Who are the fellows?
SUNY faculty who want to broaden their skill set to further support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Why should I join?
Taking the time to plan to teach in new ways, implementing the plan, and getting and providing feedback to and from peers results in actual changes to your practice that benefit students.

Self-Paced Module:
Exploration of Belonging for Educators
Lumen’s self-paced virtual workshop, Exploration of Belonging for Educators: Creating a Sense of Belonging to Support Student Success and Well-Being, aligns with SUNY’s commitment to building a more inclusive community that encourages persistence, completion, and success for all SUNY students—regardless of background, program of study, or campus.
This self-paced online workshop is appropriate for SUNY faculty and staff who engage with students. For example, instructors, librarians, instructional designers, advisors, and student success staff.

Participants may work at their own pace until July 31, 2022 (when the course closes).
- How much time do I need?
This is a self-paced course made up of 4 modules (~5 hours of effort per module).
- What topics will be covered?
Modules include: Fostering a Sense of Belonging, Exploring Social Identities, Deconstructing Bias, and Balancing Power.
- Why should I join
This course will help you create an environment where each student feels like they matter by introducing you to strategies that encourage, respect, and validate students' individual contributions and make them feel that they belong.

Lumen Circles Fellowship:
Course Design for Student Success
Lumen Circle's course design for student success helps faculty to learn how to effectively design or redesign a course with proven methods and techniques that support student belonging, learning, and success.
This fellowship is appropriate for faculty that are not currently teaching and teaching. Faculty enrolled in this course can expect to find resources to help support the addition of SUNY's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Education Framework into their courses.

4 weeks.

Course design or redesign allows instructors to reimagine their course based on feedback from students and peers and incorporate evidence-based practices and universal design for learning into their courses.
